Petition to condemn government plans to close tube ticket offices
Secret plans recently leaked to the press have revealed that London Mayor, Boris Johnson intends to close all of the 268 underground and overground ticket offices in London over the next two years. This is bad news for Londoners but could also have a detrimental effect on local commuters.
The closures will affect three stations across the area seeing local job losses at Dagenham Heathway, Dagenham East and Elm Park in the Havering side of the constituency. As well as job losses, closures could be detrimental to public safety by putting late night commuters at a higher risk of crime and increased feelings of vulnerability.
Jon said: “These proposed closures will seriously impede local commuters, making their journeys more difficult and less safe. Reports suggest that it is not only ticket office staff, but station guards and managers that will lose their jobs as well.
“Over the past few years the security has improved and anti-social behaviour has dropped significantly at all of our local stations – however these cuts are set to change that. Older commuters and children will feel vulnerable late at night and there are real concerns about having insufficient staff at the station to deal with emergencies.
“The Tory-led coalition government are putting public safety at risk in order to save money which is totally unacceptable. I will be doing everything I can, by raising a petition and writing to Boris Johnson and the TFL to condemn these deplorable and economically damaging cuts.”
