Drivers across the borough have been forced to pay exorbitant fines after being pounced upon by private car clamping operators. Jon has had many constituents raise this matter with him and in some cases the cowboy clampers have used bullying and intimidating behaviour to pressure people into paying the large fine to have their car released.

Justice Secretary, Jack Straw was out speaking to people in Dagenham with Jon Cruddas to hear about the strength of feeling around proposals to build a new prison in Dagenham.
Jon has campaigned against plans for a new 1,500 capacity facility since its announcement without local consultation. Since then Jon has had thousands of constituents sign his petition against the prison. Jack Straw said, “People are always apprehensive about the idea of a prison in their area”.

Jon Cruddas has welcomed the decision of the Government to refuse permission for a 8,000 seat mega church in Rainham.
The Kingsway International Christian Centre had appealed against the decision refuse planning permission for an auditorium and place of worship at the Beam Reach 5 Business Park in Rainham. Labour Minister, John Denham upheld the local decision and delighted local campaigners by respecting our views.
Jon Cruddas said, “I’m delighted the government has respected the outcome of the local planning inquiry into this development. I wish the Church well and trust they can find a location that has both the support of the local community and the right transport links they need.”

In the summer of 2009, Jon was contacted by a large number of people who were concerned by the possible closure of Age Concern services in Dagenham. Age Concern provide an excellent service for older local people, allowing them to meet up over lunch, keep active or just to have some company.
Sharing these concerns, Jon spoke to the leader of Barking and Dagenham Council, Labour Councillor Liam Smith, who agreed that the continuation of these services was of great importance to the elderly community of Dagenham. He responded to Jon’s calls by agreeing to fund the services, ensuring they remain open.
Jon said, “I am delighted that by working together, Dagenham Labour has managed to secure the future of these services. I want to thank everyone who wrote to me about this too. I’m pleased I’ve been able to make a difference.”

Jon Cruddas MP, alongside local Labour Councillors, has launched a campaign against plans for a new 1,500 place prison on the former Ford site in Dagenham.
The proposal was revealed on 27th April by Justice Secretary Jack Straw, with the backing of London Mayor Boris Johnson, who heads the London Development Agency (LDA) which owns the site.
Jon has tabled over 50 parliamentary questions relating to the plans, covering every aspect of the proposals. He highlighted major concerns over the suitability of the former Ford site, which has a huge amount of potential to benefit the local community, potential that would be lost with the prison.
